New World A Comin’ is an invitation to hear contemporary Caribbean music like you have never heard before. In the informal setting of a rehearsed reading, be among the first to hear a selection of new and rarely heard works by the composers performed by old friends and new collaborators.

Tongoy Triptych for two guitars, inspired by a road trip in Chile and Le Génie Humain for orchestra, a meditative poem on the human spirit’s quest for transcendence will have their first hearing. The programme includes four songs from Dominique’s collection, Songs of the Islands with traditional songs in new arrangements and poems by Kamau Brathwaite, Martin Carter and Derek Walcott set to original music; the overture of her musical theatre work Jab Molassie-a Trinidadian take on Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale and Adam Walters’ The Old Yard: Portraits of Carnival. Written in 2012 for the University of Trinidad and Tobago's resident Ibis Ensemble, the movements are inspired by some of Trinidad's best-loved traditional Carnival characters. Drawing on recognisably Trinidadian rhythmic and motivic gestures and blending these with harmonies and instrumentation more closely associated with the western classical tradition, The Old Yard: Portraits of Carnival is a cross-cultural musical mash-up inspired by the Caribbean's greatest festival.

The rehearsed reading is supported by Arts Council National Lottery Projects Grant and The South Bank Centre.
