Thomas Sanderling

Glowing May 2024 Review

German Newspaper Thüringer Allgemeine Zeitung

In the 9th Symphony Concert of the Erfurt Philharmonic Orchestra, guest conductor Thomas Sanderling hit exactly this internalized tone in the overture “Calm of the Sea and Happy Voyage”. His baton moved barely noticeably, while a mysterious, nebulous mood prevailed in the Erfurt theater...

Sanderling’s reading of this seascape was fragile and enigmatic...

The concert ended with Schumann’s Fourth Symphony, Maestro Sanderling once again showed his ormidable sense of form and control of sound. Concentrated strings, filigree wood and majestically blowing brass provided the necessary degree of compactness in the coordinated interplay of this tricky, constantly drifting symphony.

Raphael Wallfisch

Raphael Wallfisch has remained as busy as ever in the year since he joined Hennessey Brown Music. Selected highlights include playing the Moeran cello concerto with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the English Music Festival and recording the Henriette Bosmans cello concerto with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He has played in a poignant performance of Jonatan Dove’s In Exile with his son Simon singing the baritone part. The Poznan Philharmonic were conducted by Lukasz Borowicz.

Raphael’s energy, versatility and repertoire is extraordinary with dozens of concertos at his fingertips. His piano trio have performed 2 sell out concerts at the Wigmore Hall since he joined us.

Within ten days of his recent return from Poland Raphael played three superb performances of Taverner’s Protecting Veil in a brilliant production with students from Trinity Laban College of Music. They performed at Blackheath Halls, Stoller Hall Manchester and Wells. Oh, and Raphael played in a very demanding chamber music programme on the Thursday at the Leamington International Music Festival. We wish we had his energy!
